Reputedly England’s finest Baroque church, Christ Church in London’s Spitalfields is Hawksmoor's masterpiece. Originally built in the early 18th century, years of neglect in the twentieth century led to a threat of demolition by the 1960s.
MRC was initially commissioned by the Monument Trust to help the Christ Church Restoration Trust come up with an integrated plan to complete the piecemeal restoration work. We brought together the principal funders, including the HLF, to establish a single phase project that would restore the derelict interior and provide new opportunities for use. We coordinated a technical specification that would accommodate the annual music festival (to broadcast quality) and appointed the team who carried out the painstaking examination of the archaeological evidence - a few drawings, some contemporary accounts and some pieces of salvaged timber.
We subsequently acted as project manager to complete the restoration.
